Is 4 days too short for a safari in Kenya?

“Although you can see a lot on a 4-day safari in Kenya, it is quite short. If possible, I would recommend adding a few days. With a bit more time, you’ll be able to unwind and get in tune with the rhythms of the bush. It takes a few days to really settle into a safari, and extra days make it easier to do so. However, if you are set on 4 days, you should make the most of it with good planning. The main thing is not to try to cram too much into your itinerary. You’ll just end up spending all your time driving between destinations. Rather, pick one or two places at which to spend quality time. Every game drive is different so you can even spend your 3 nights/4 days in one location.”

How much will this safari cost?

“The cost of a 4-day safari in Kenya varies greatly. Expect a starting price of US$400 per person for a 4-day budget camping tour, going up to US$800 per person for a mid-range lodge tour. Luxury tours start at around US$1,000 per person. A camping safari is usually the most budget-friendly option. The cost of a lodge safari depends on the level of luxury and comfort of the accommodations. Top-of-the-range lodges are usually visited on fly-in safaris. Road safaris using mid-range lodgings are cheaper. You have more flexibility on a private safari, but group safaris are priced lower as some of the costs are shared. Then there are the seasons to consider. You can opt for a low-season safari to get away from the crowds and get access to good deals. This is often the most beautiful time of the year, but you should be prepared for some rain. I recommend getting a few quotations from different tour operators before making a decision.”

Where should I go on a 4-day safari in Kenya?

“You’ll have several different options regarding where you can go on a 4-day Kenyan safari. With limited time, a fly-in safari to the Masai Mara National Reserve is an excellent choice. The wildlife viewing in this vast ecosystem is superb, and no two game drives are ever the same. A road trip from Nairobi to the Masai Mara is also viable, and it gives you the opportunity to spend a night in Lake Nakuru National Park in the Rift Valley. The lake is home to many waterbirds, including flocks of flamingo and pelican, and you’ll probably see rhino here (they’re not so easily found in the Masai Mara). A popular 4-day trip from Mombasa and its nearby beach resorts takes you to Amboseli National Park at the base of Mt Kilimanjaro. It also includes Tsavo East National Park with its ‘red’ elephant, and the underwater viewing chamber at Mzima Springs in Tsavo West National Park. Or, for a more relaxed approach, you can opt to settle into Amboseli NP for the duration of your safari. Ol Pejeta Conservancy (or any of the other Laikipia Plateau reserves) is also a great destination for a 4-day safari. Here you can see all of the Big Five (lion, leopard, buffalo, elephant and rhino), and clear days offer views of the snow-capped peaks of Mt Kenya.”

What accommodations can I expect?

“A wide range of accommodations is available in most of Kenya’s more popular parks and reserves for your 4-day safari. Lodging comes in different price brackets and styles. Budget accommodations are usually located just outside the parks and reserves. No-frills mid-range lodges offer a bit more comfort and can be found in better locations. Some of the accommodations are in proper hotels offering all the mod cons you could expect in a city, while others keep it deliberately simple. Tented camps are very popular. These have standing beds and en suite bathrooms, so don’t think you’ll be roughing it. The luxury lodges differentiate themselves with classy decor, great food and personalized service. You might even get your own butler. Another option is to go back to basics and book a camping safari in Kenya. The operators are well equipped to make the experience very comfortable, and the campsites are usually in great locations close to the action inside the parks.”

What is the best time of the year for a trip in Kenya?

“The best time of the year for a safari in Kenya is in the Dry season, which runs from June to October. At this time the grass is short, and thirsty animals gather around water sources. It gets better as the season progresses. To catch the wildebeest migration, you should aim to be in the Masai Mara between August and October. The spectacular crossings of the Mara River take place in or around August, but the exact timing depends on the rains. Although the Dry season is most productive in terms of wildlife viewing, some of the Wet season months (November to February) can be lovely too. Everything is lush and green, and there are fewer visitors around. You might get better deals too.”

Is it likely that I will see all of the Big Five?

“It is possible to see all of the Big Five on a 4-day safari in Kenya. Although all five species are present in the Masai Mara NR, your chances of seeing rhino here aren’t great. However, a stopover in Lake Nakuru NP will sort that out. White rhino are very common there, and if you’re lucky you could see black rhino too. Another great area to see the Big Five on a 4-day safari is on Laikipia Plateau. Here you have a choice of several Big Five reserves. Rhino is particularly common, but leopard sightings are trickier here. Tsavo West NP is also a great Big Five destination. However, wildlife densities are quite low in this amazing wilderness area. Even so, of the Big Five, you’re likely to see elephant, buffalo and maybe lion and rhino.”
