This was my favorite park. It seemed a little out of the way (maybe it was the direction we came from). We were one of only a handful of vehicles in the park while there. We must have seen a thousand elephants, they were just everywhere. We also saw a cheetah, impala, zebra, giraffe, a cobra going across the road and tons of birds. I don't even like birds and I found myself really interested in seeking them out here. They were very unusual and again, we didn't see the same ones anywhere else. We stayed at Tarangire River Camp which was perfect. We were actually the only people there due to the season. The staff treated us like family, food was great and we got to hear elephants and lions at night.

We would have loved to spend more time in Tarangire. We encountered fewer vehicles and had great opportunities to watch elephants and meerkats for an extended time without much disturbance.

We saw lions, leopards, water buffalo, elephants and zebra within 10 meters of our windows at Tarangire. We saw more birds and other wildlife up close and bigger variety at Tarangire in October and November in two consecutive years than the Masai Mara or Ngorongoro Crater. Make sure you check the wildlife migration patterns before you go to any national park to make sure you are booking the right season. We saw lions stalking kudu and other tourists we spoke with saw lions kill zebras. We saw loots of abay elephants up close.

Elephants everywhere and a true magical kingdom

My first visit to Africa was filled with anticipation and excitement and all I knew to expect was what I had read online and in books. But nothing can prepare you for what you really experience and how each day is filled with wonder and awe at seeing animals roam as nature intended. I know most people have a long checklist of animals they want to see and seeing the Big Five are how some people measure a successful trip to Africa. Looking back on my trip now to Tarangire, I have to measure my trip by the number of magical moments. As the dust kicks up as the guide speeds down the road, you start to see the ancient Baobab trees come into view. The trees are so big and they watch over the landscape like giants in the hot sun. With the ability to store a large amount of water, many of these trees will have hollowed out trunks, the results of direct contact with elephants and their search for water. My excitement for going to Africa was to see Elephants in the wild and I was not disappointed,
Read more especially in Tarangire. After awhile you see so many that they become almost common place, even showing up at hotels to roam the grounds. Our Guide, Gabriel from Maasai Magic Safaris was so knowledgable about animal behavior and obviously loves what he does. He was very patient for this photographer to get the shots I needed and made sure that my trip met all my expectations.

Located slightly off the main safari route, Tarangire National Park is a lovely, quiet park in Northern Tanzania. It is most famous for its elephant migration, birding and authentic safari atmosphere. The majority of travellers to the region either miss out Tarangire altogether or venture into the park for a matter of hours - leaving swathes of Tarangire virtually untouched!

Planet of the Elephants

My fiancé and I are in our 30's from New York City and recently took a two week tour to Kenya and Tanzania. What an incredible life experience that everyone must absolutely do in their lifetime - and better sooner rather than later. You will feel like you're living in a National Geographic video. Just make sure you go the right time of year. Children will absolutely love it - just make sure they're old enough to remember it. In Kenya we went to Ol Pejeta Conservancy, Samburu Game Reserve, Lake Nakuru National Park and the highlight, the incredible Maasai Mara to witness the great migration. In Tanzania we went to Tarangire National Park, Lake Manyara Park and Ngorongoro Crater. Tarangire was our first stop in Tanzania after Kenya and our first reaction was "whoa, there are a lot of elephants here. And they are BIG" - they owned the place. We saw baby and adolescent elephants play fighting which was a highlight. Plenty of other animals as well - we saw
Read more lions, leopards lazing about in the trees, several bird species, zebras and wildebeest. We really enjoyed our time in Tarangire and highly encourage you to visit.

Tarangire for Walking Safaris and Night Drives

A wildlife photographer’s paradise, Tanzania’s Tarangire National Park is often overlooked in favor of the Serengeti or Ngorongoro Crater, making it feel like the park is your private reserve. Only 75 miles from Arusha, our first itinerary stop became a favorite during our 3-night stay at Oliver’s Camp with Natural Habitat, true glamping.
It was the only park where we could do a walking safari and night drive, both exciting adventures I recommend. Our guides were knowledgeable, safety-minded and great spotters. It is also the park to see the magnificent Baobab tree. Back in the Jeep, elephant families, lions with cubs, wildebeest, giraffe, warthogs, cape buffalo, mongoose and herds of zebra made every turn in the road a new photo op. Larger birds like ostrich, vultures, hornbills, Secretary bird and the Kori bustard as well as the smaller multi-colored Lilac breasted roller, African hoopoe or iridescent superb starling kept my camera busy. A greener park in late August
Read more than most, Tarangire’s river supplies water to numerous animals and birds. Hang out on the parallel road and you will be rewarded.

Great Place For Wildlife

What makes Tarangire special is your guaranteed to see lots of wildlife. More then enough elephants, giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, monkeys, and more. When I visited in October was just past the rainy season and the weather was perfect. The rugged terrain there seems to help contain the animals to the park. The dirt roads are also well placed taking you near great watering holes and the road. The park also has great facilities at the entrance and lunch service was available. The park was not crowded but did have a steady stream of groups coming and going.
